WHAT THIS VISA DOES
The Subclass 820/801 Partner Visa allows the partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to apply for residency from within Australia.
Once lodged, you can usually remain in Australia on a bridging visa while your application is processed.
HOW THE PROCESS WORKS
Step 1 – Lodge Application
You apply for both the temporary (820) and permanent (801) visa at the same time.
Step 2 – Bridging Visa
You are granted a bridging visa, allowing you to remain in Australia.
Step 3 – Temporary Visa (820)
The Department assesses your relationship and grants the temporary visa.
Step 4 – Permanent Visa (801)
After approximately 2 years, you may be eligible for permanent residency.
